The Trust » The history of the Trust
The Shay has been the home of Halifax Town Football Club since 1921. As the fortunes of Halifax Town have fluctuated it has been hard at times for the club to maintain the Shay.
Following the sale of their ground at Thrum Hall, Halifax Rugby League Club moved to the Shay in 1997. On the back of justifiable optimism that this represented a new era for both clubs, it was decided to proceed with the East Stand.
Due to financial problems the stand has never been completed.
What the problems of the last few years have brought is a sense of realism - recognition that there are no magic wands and that the only future for Calderdale’s professional clubs and the Shay Stadium is to work together.
From this new realism was born the Shay Stadium Trust the company that is running the Shay Stadium.
What is the Shay Stadium Trust?
The Shay Stadium Trust (SST) is an independent not for profit company jointly formed by Halifax Town, Halifax Rugby League Club and their two Supporters Trusts. Each has a seat on the Board. There are five independent directors. The Chairman and vice Chairman are drawn from the independent directors.
The independent directors were appointed from the wider community for their specific skills and expertise to push through the development of the Shay. The sole concern of SST is with the operation and development of the Stadium leaving the two clubs to concentrate solely on playing matters.
Ambitions
The ambition is to develop a truly inclusive stadium that will be used by all the community and serve a variety of sports. SST is currently setting a series of ambitious targets for the redevelopment of the Shay including:
Completion of the East Stand
and
The development of The Shay Estate.
The potential for what might happen at the Shay is enormous and exciting and could include not just the Shay Estate but also the ‘Leisure Corridor.’
