The map below, from 1852, shows the Shay Estate lying on the south side of the town. Caygill's Walk (in red) runs along the top of the estate, though forty years later it was to be transformed into the present Skircoat Road.

You can clearly see many roads on the map which are still within the town today, however there is no Skircoat Road or Commercial Street - Wards End is the only clue as to where these two roads would later appear.

The Piece Hall is clearly visible as is the Royal Oak public house if you look close enough.
